Parkhead, Dalmarnock and Camlachie
Parkhead, Dalmarnock and Camlachie Thriving Place (PDC) is located in the east end of the city.
Locality Plan
Thriving Places was introduced in Parkhead, Dalmarnock and Camlachie in 2014 to help improve the quality of life of people who live and work here. This can mean trying to improve health and wellbeing, community safety, education, employment, income, housing,the local environment or access to services. It can also mean encouraging local involvement in decision making.
Early achievements made by partners include:
- Identification of key work themes - a Thriving Places action plan has been developed with the following themes: Health & Resilience; Environment; Community Safety; Amenities; Employability & Learning; Transport; and Community Involvement.
- Match days at Celtic Park - partners have explored how events at Celtic Park impact the whole community, with a particular focus on match day parking and how local school children are affected on match days. Glasgow City Council, Camlachie Community Council and West of Scotland Housing have been key partners in this work.
- Delivery of a programme bespoke Thriving Place activities and providing additional support to existing projects - these projects include Cafe Stork, Family Meals and Homework Club, Family Food and Fun, Barrowfield Tea Dance, John Wheatley Learning Network, Thriving Places History Group and Community Breakfasts.
2019/20 Update
Parkhead, Dalmarnock and Camlachie Thriving Place is supported mainly by a small team employed by West of Scotland Housing Association and based in Barrowfield Community Centre. In 2019/20 the team was made up of Meabh Bradley, Sean Ewart and Collette McLure.
An action plan for the local area was agreed by the organisations involved in the Parkhead, Dalmarnock and Camlachie Thriving Places Steering Group. This was based on both official statistics and findings from the door-to-door survey carried out in early 2019. The action plan was widely shared and was well received by local people.
Further conversations were carried out with local people at activities and events, social media and telephone consultations. Between March 2019 and March 2020, seven CommuniTea Party events were held, attended by 248 local people. Also, two local networking events were held in Jan and Feb 2020, with 32 people from local services and organisations attending. Two newsletters were produced in 2019/2020 (Summer and Winter) and these were made available at events and key places throughout the communities, such as Barrowfield Community Centre.
Parkhead, Dalmarnock and Camlachie Thriving Place helped set up new community groups. For example, the Women's Blether Group started in July 2019 and is now almost completely self-running. The Walking Group met weekly from March 2019 until March 2020. The FOOT Project (Families Out On Tour) was designed with the help of local parents in Parkhead who were keen to find out more about places and activities that their families could access. This project started in Oct 2019 and 11 local organisations were visited by the group of local families.
Starting in 2019/20, staff from Parent Network Scotland (PNS) signposted families to Thriving Places for additional support. An event was held in February 2020 to promote opportunities to local families and this was attended by 72 local people. This was done with Parent Network Scotland, who invited the families they work with at Quarry Brae Primary School. The event had a buffet, mini pamper sessions for parents, arts and crafts and face painting, as well as opportunities to learn about family support services and activities. The event was also supported by staff from Glasgow Association for Mental Health (GAMH), Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) and Parkhead Youth Project.
The Splash project was set up in summer 2019 to encourage families to attend Glasgow Life services (including swimming) and to encourage volunteering opportunities at future sporting events. This was supported by Glasgow Sport, Glasgow Life, Scottish Sports Futures and Scottish Swimming.
Parkhead, Dalmarnock and CamlachieThriving Place supported various initiatives to promote digital access with the help of West of Scotland Housing Association's (WSHA), Glasgow Life and Citizens Advice Bureau.
The Thriving Places team helped out with holiday programmes in the local area over the year. For example, they helped run youth services and holiday programmes in Barrowfield in partnership with WSHA and Scottish Sports Futures.
Small amounts of seed funding were provided through Thriving Places for some local projects. For example, Green Heart Growers were funded with additional support for volunteering opportunities in the community garden and growing initiatives in Parkhead. Baltic Street Adventure Play were funded to purchase materials and the Thriving Places team signposted local people to the project.
2018/19 Update
In early 2018/19, locality planning partners in Parkhead/Dalmarnock/Camlachie focused on establishing a Community Involvement Sub-Group. The remit of this group was to consider co-ordinated approaches to community engagement and involvement within the work of Thriving Places. This led to a new community consultation exercise in January 2019, led by Glasgow Kelvin College. This consultation involved 496 individuals and 3 focus groups. Key findings included:
- A wealth of support for increasing the amount of activities available locally for young people;
- A gap in activities for older people in the area; and
- Many residents are keen to be more involved in improving their community, with 134 respondents stating that they would like to be involved in developing the local plan and 150 respondents stating they would be interested in volunteering to help with local services.
Working with young people was another area of focus for partners in 2018/19. A Youth Enquiry was undertaken by Glasgow Kelvin College on behalf of the Thriving Places Steering Group. This included streetwork in the Parkhead area from November 2018 until February 2019, establishing a photography group to engage young people in a youth enquiry about their community and taking a group of young people to Badaguish, Aviemore.
Also in 2018/19, Calton was selected as one of four areas in the city to pilot Participatory Budgeting. The Calton project took in the locality planning area, and specifically focused on child poverty. The work was supported by Child Poverty Action Group and a panel of 14 residents.
How You Can Get Involved
The Parkhead/Dalmarnock/Camlachie Thriving Places Steering Group is chaired by Councillor Greg Hepburn and currently comprises of representatives from Clyde Gateway, Glasgow City Council, Glasgow City Health and Social Care Partnership, Glasgow Kelvin College, Glasgow Life and West of Scotland Housing Association.
The role of the Steering Group is to provide direction, support, resources and co-ordination of the Thriving Places approach in the defined Parkhead/Dalmarnock/Camlachie Thriving Places area by connecting to local people, relevant structures and networks. It is pivotal that the diversity of the local community is represented, therefore Councillor Hepburn would like to invite residents from Parkhead, Dalmarnock and Camlachie who are part of a community group to join the Steering Group.
