The Big Lunch
The Big Lunch is a simple idea from the Eden Project. The aim is to get as many of the 61 million people in the UK as possible to get together with their neighbours on one day – this year Sunday 5th June. The initiative is funded by the Big Lottery Fund.
Since starting in 2009, thousands of Big Lunches have taken place in all types of community – from the most deprived to the most secure - and nearly a million people have taken part each year. It’s a simple yet profound act of community that can have a real impact: research shows that when people get together to organise a Big Lunch, they feel good and it has a noticeable effect on their area. After taking part in 2010, 79% of participants said that they feel better about where they live and 95% felt closer to their neighbours. What’s more, they are more likely to keep in touch, lend each other a hand and plan future events together.
The organisers are looking for help to get more people than ever to come out and have lunch with their neighbours for The Big Lunch on Sunday 5th June 2011.
