Fit for Life is a sports, physical activity and healthy living programme that is provided in partnership between Celtic Football Club, Rangers Football Club, West Community Health and Care partnership and Strathclyde Fire and Rescue. The programme was initiated in 2008/09 as a pilot but has been receiving financial supprt from the West CPP and "in kind" support from the participating agencies in the subsequent years.
Each year, three ten weekly free programmes are run by each of the football clubs with the annual target of 90 participants. The programmes are targetted at men aged 40 – 60, who don’t attend their GP and have concerns about their health.
Following a general health assessment in Week 1, each weekly session focuses on a different area of health and lifestyle each week, covering topics such as
- Diet and Nutrition,
- Physical activity
- Stress Management
- Tobacco, Alcohol & Drug Use
- Mens Health Issues
- Home Fire Safety
followed by a one hour activity session led by the Clubs’ coaches, using the facilities at both Celtic and Rangers Football Clubs.
A recent evaluation identified that "the project has demonstrated the ‘pull’ of football to encourage participation in health-related activities. There have been positive impacts on health indicators among participants (for example weight, BMI, cholesterol). And there is some anecdotal evidence of lifestyle changes among participants." More robust processes have been put in place to follow up participants after they complete the programme.
